රත්නවීරයන්ගේ මුද්දර මිණිකැට: වනජීවී කලාකරුවෙකුගේ ප්‍රභාශ්වරය ...

ජීවිතයේ වසර 50කට වැඩි කාලයක් තම වෘත්තිය වෙනුවෙන් කැප කර, අතිශය සුන්දර නිර්මාණ ලෝකයාට දායාද කරන ලද කෘතහස්ත නිර්මාණකරුවෙක් වන ගාමිණී රත්නවිරයන් වනජීවී සිතුවම් කලාවේ විශිෂ්ඨ සලකුණකි. ඔහුගේ සිතුවම් මඟින් රටවල් 55කට අධික සංඛ්‍යාවක වනජීවීන් 4,000කට අධික දුර්ලභ, අද්විතීය මෙන්ම වඳවීමේ තර්ජනයට ලක්ව ඇති විශේෂ සංඛ්‍යාවක් නිරූපණය කර ඇති බව සඳහන් ය.
සහජයෙන් ලද සිතුවම් කුසලතාවය ස්වඅධ්‍යයනය මඟින් වැඩිදියුණු කර ඔහු සිය ප්‍රථම සිතුවම් ප්‍රදර්ශනය 1977 දී පවත්වන්නට යෙදුණි. පසුව එවකට ජනාධිපති ජේ.ආර්. ජයවර්ධන මහතාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් ඔහු තවත් සිතුවම් ප්‍රදර්ශනයක් 1979 දී පැවැත්වීය. ඉක්බිතිව ජනාධිපති ජේ.ආර්. ජයවර්ධන මහතා වනජීවී දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ, වනජීවී හා සංරක්ෂණය පිළිබඳ ඔහුගේ ප්‍රධාන උපදේශකයා ලෙස රත්නවීර මහතාව පත් කරන ලදී. අදටත් භාවිතයේ පවතින වනජීවී සංරක්ෂණ දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ ලාංඡනය ද රත්නවීර මහතාගේ නිර්මාණයකි. 
අනතුරුව, ජේ.ආර්. ජයවර්ධන මහතාගේ ආරාධනයෙන් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ප්‍රමුඛ සත්ව විද්‍යාඥයෙකු සහ සංරක්ෂණවාදියෙකු වන ලින් ද අල්විස් මහතාගේ මඟපෙන්වීම යටතේ නිර්මාණයන් 38ක ගෙන් ගාමිණී රත්නවිර මහතා ලාංකීය මුද්දර ඉතිහාසයට එකතු විය. එම මුද්දර නිර්මාණ ලංකාවේ අනර්ඝ නිර්මාණ බව නොරහසකි.
1986 දී 2වන එලිසබෙත් රැජිනගේ සැමියා වන පිලිප් කුමරු ලෝක වනජීවී අරමුදලේ (WWF) සභාපතිවරයා ලෙස කටයුතු කරන සමයේ ඔහු සමඟ "ඔවුන්ට ජීවත් වීමට ඉඩ දෙන්න" ("Let them Live") යන තේමාවෙන් සංවිධානය කෙරුණු ප්‍රධාන අලි සංරක්ෂණ වැඩසටහනට සහාය වීම සඳහා ගාමිණී රත්නවීර මහතා ලෝක වනජීවී අරමුදල (WWF) සමඟ සහයෝගයෙන් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ අලි ඇතුන් සහිත මුද්දර හතරක කට්ටලයක නිර්මාණය ද මේ අතර වේ.
"Brushes with Nature" නම් ගාමිණී රත්නවීරයන්ගේ 4 වන කලා කෘති ප්‍රදර්ශනය 2025 නොවැම්බර් 7-9 දක්වා ලයනල් වෙන්ඩ්ට් කලාගාරයේ හැරල්ඩ් පීරිස් ගැලරියේදී පැවැත්වේ. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ශාඛ හා සත්ව විශේෂ පිළිබඳ මුල් සිතුවම් 50 ක් එහිදී ප්‍රදර්ශනය කෙරේ. 
එම දුර්ලභ අවස්ථාවට සහභාගී වී ඔහු සමඟ ඔහුගේ මුද්දර නිර්මාණ පිළිබඳව සාකච්ජා කිරීමට අපට අවස්ථාව ලැබුණි. වනජීවී මුද්දර නිර්මාණයන් පිළිබඳව ඔහුගේ අදහස වූයේ සොබාදහමේ සුන්දර හා නිවැරදි සබඳතා ග්‍රහණය කර ගැනීම සඳහා ශාඛ හා සත්ව විශේෂ ඔවුන්ගේ සැබෑ පරිසරයට ගැලපිය යුතු බව සිහි තබා ගැනීම අතිශය වැදගත් කරුණක් බවයි. මෙය වනජීවී සමරු මුද්දර නිර්මාණකරුවනට සහ අදාල බලධාරීන්ට විශිෂ්ඨයෙකු ලබාදෙන මාර්ගොපදෙශයක් ලෙස සලකා කටයුතු කිරීම මැනවි යනු අපගේ අදහසයි.
Ratnavira's Stamps:
The brilliance of a wildlife artist ...
Gamini Ratnavira, a brilliant artist who has dedicated over 50 years of his life to his profession and gifted the world with exquisite creations, is a great icon of wildlife painting. It is said that his paintings have depicted over 4,000 rare, unique and endangered species of wildlife from over 55 countries.
Improving his innate painting skills through self-study, he started holding his first painting exhibition in 1977. Later, he held another painting exhibition under the patronage of the then President J.R. Jayewardene in 1979. Soon after, President J.R. Jayewardene appointed Mr. Ratnavira as his Chief Advisor on Wildlife and Conservation at the Department of Wildlife. The logo of the Department of Wildlife Conservation, which is still in use today, is also a design by Mr. Ratnavira.
Subsequently, at the invitation of Mr. J.R. Jayewardene and under the guidance of Mr. Lynn de Alwis who was a leading zoologist and conservationist in Sri Lanka, Mr. Gamini Ratnavira commenced designing for stamps. He went on to create 38 designs adding his creations to the history of Sri Lankan stamps. It is no secret that those stamp designs are invaluable creations in Sri Lanka.
In 1986, when Prince Philip, spouse of Queen Elizabeth II, was serving as the President of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Mr. Gamini Ratnavira collaborated with the WWF to design a set of four stamps featuring Sri Lankan elephants to support the major elephant conservation program organized in the theme "Let them Live".
Mr. Gamini Ratnavira's 4th art exhibition titled "Brushes with Nature" is held from 7-9 November 2025 at the Harold Peiris Gallery of the Lionel Wendt Art Theater. There 50 original paintings of Sri Lankan flora and fauna is on display.
We had the opportunity to participate in this rare occasion and discuss with him his stamp designs. His idea about wildlife stamp designs was that it is extremely important to remember that plants and animals should match their real environment in order to capture the beautiful and accurate relationships with the nature. We believe that this should be considered as a guideline for wildlife stamp designers and relevant authorities.
